Pa Thong Go

Chinese Cruller

“Pa Thong Go” ( ปาท่องโก๋ ) is a popular Thai variation of the traditional Chinese pastry “Youtiao” (油條). These strips of dough fried in hot oil are typically served as breakfast, often accompanied by sweetened coconut milk or soya milk.

The term “Pa Thong Go” does not originate from the Youtiao, but comes from the Chinese term for a rice cake called “Bái Tángguǒ” (白糖粿). Street vendors in Thailand used to offer both this cake and youtiao, calling out both names.

Over time, the Thai public apparently assumed that the name Pa Thong Go belonged to the deep-fried sticks. As the actual rice cake found little favour , it gradually disappeared from the market - what remained was the name that is still used for youtiao in Thailand today.
